Living Large in the Living Room
My client had lived in this new, larger home for about 4 years. They had never owned nice living room furniture before and were ready to invest in pieces that they could enjoy for years to come. They had an area rug that they wanted incorporated into the design, and we needed to include a baby grand piano in the scheme as well. Beyond that, making it a comfortable, livable, enjoyable space for them and for entertaining were our main objectives.
Elements/challenges of existing space design include:
- Develop a furniture arrangement that considers comfort for conversation and for flow from one space to another
- Keep a fairly traditional style to the furnishings
- Consider a color palette that incorporated the existing area rug
- Make a place for the baby grand piano
- Consider treasured paintings to be used in the space
- Select fabrics that would wear well and look good for a long time
Solutions:
- The first step to designing this space was to determine an overall arrangement for furniture and the not-too-small baby grand piano
- Identifying colors within the area rug that would drive the color palette for the fabrics overall
- Identifying the pieces of furniture themselves and a series of fabrics that could be coordinated together to create a total look to the living room
- Including an upholstered bench that sits under an overlook from a stair landing but can be used for extra seating when entertaining
- Keeping the proporation large but manageable in a room with a vaulted ceiling
