Bold Kitchen Update
With new appliances on the wish list and a client that may decide to sell and move in the next 5 years, there was a very limited budget for updating this kitchen even though there was a strong desire to see a significant difference. An existing funky color combination of light and dark turquoise with touches of hot pink masked cabinets that were in good condition and a “Hoosier” cabinet that added much to the uniqueness and overall charm of the kitchen. Limited counter space was further limited with a microwave that sat on the counter and the connecting nook of the kitchen really didn’t feel connected at all.
Elements/challenges of existing space design include:
- Limited budget to make significant impact
- Could make no change to the footprint whatsoever
- Updating what were probably at least 70 year-old cabinets
- Gaining storage and counter space
- Increasing the connection between the kitchen and the breakfast nook
Solutions:
- Cleaning up the surfaces of the cabinets and repainting them white with new, contemporary pulls
- Highlighting a section of the “Hoosier” cabinet with black paint to make it stand apart from the rest of what is a white wall of cabinetry
- Build in the microwave to increase counter space near the range
- Install new black quartz countertops to set of the new cabinet color
- Install bright new backsplash in red, white and gold to coordinate with the new gold wall color and brighten the whole space
- Install new cushions/pillows to coordinate with the kitchen colors
- Install pendant lights as additional lighting as well as an accent to the beautiful windows along the main wall of the kitchen
